Chapter Twelve

Jessie was so stunned by Grady’s accusation that it took her a few seconds to even process his words. How dare he accuse her of being dumb, when he was the one always spouting off about how much he wanted his own, blood-related children?

As soon as he parked the car, she hopped out, practically sprinting to the station’s door in her haste to escape him.

Allen manned the front desk. “You guys are just in time. The folks who came to claim the baby are in the break room with both of your moms.”

“Thanks, man.” The guys shook hands.

Jessie was still so miffed with Grady she couldn’t stand looking at him. Maybe because you know he’s right?

The maddening thing about the question she’d asked herself was that part of her feared it was true. She was in such a panic over Angel’s family being found, because the time she’d spent with her proved how easy it was to fall for any child. Of course, the notion of bonding for nine months and feeling her baby’s first kick and breastfeeding were her idea of bliss—so much so that she’d adopted an all-or-nothing mentality in regard to her infertility issue. If she couldn’t have her own baby, she didn’t want one at all. But if that was the case, then why had she blamed her unhappiness on Grady, when all he’d tried to do since she’d told him was help?

In the break room, Jessie stood with her back pressed against the counter that held the coffee machine, microwave, sink and three boxes of assorted doughnuts.

“I’m so nervous.” The female half of the couple who’d come to inspect Angel wouldn’t stop fussing with her hair. Jessie irrationally hated the stranger for the pain she was about to inflict. “We live in Seattle, and it makes me sad that our family has grown apart to the degree that I didn’t even know my cousin was in an accident, let alone that Chrissy died.” She made the sign of the cross on her chest.

Was Jessie the only one who found it odd that this woman showed up out of nowhere if she hadn’t even been close to her cousin? Something about her set off alarms in Jessie’s gut.

The stranger kept talking. “The last time we chatted was Christmas, and I knew she was pregnant, but my kids were tearing the house apart, and I didn’t get to ask her how far along. She and Jeremy—that’s her husband—lived in Phoenix, so I don’t even know what they were doing in Oklahoma.”

Hello? No one besides her found any of this strange?

“How did you find out about the accident?” Billy Sue asked the woman, all the while holding Angel to her chest. The A/C in the building was chilly, so she’d swaddled the baby in a pink receiving blanket.

“Through police. Chrissy’s parents are both deceased, and her husband, Jeremy’s, estranged from his family in New Jersey. I know this must sound odd, that I didn’t know
